Malcolm G. Munro MD, FRCSC, FACOG

OB/GYN Professor UCLA, Avana Health Advisory for Abnormal Uterine Bleeding

Dr. Munro is a Clinical Professor in the Department of Obstetrics and Gynecology of the David Geffen School of Medicine at UCLA and on the staff of Kaiser Permanente's Los Angeles Medical center. Dr. Munro’s clinical and research interests are oriented to disorders of the uterus, adnexae and surrounding structures including diagnosis, medical management and, when needed, minimally invasive approaches be they hysteroscopic, laparoscopic, vaginal or image guided. Dr Munro has developed systems and techniques for the performance of virtually all hysteroscopic and other intrauterine procedures in an office environment, solely with local anesthesia, and approach that adds safety, frees up operating rooms, and reduces costs for both patients and the health care system (Link). He has demonstrated skills in surgical education and training and is currently the Principal Investigator for the EMIG Manual Skills Construct Validation Trial. This is a joint effort of the AAGL, CREOG and the American College of Obsetricians and Gynecologists designed to developand testisystems for training and high stakes examination in hysteroscopy and laparoscopy. He is Chair of the FIGO Menstrual Disorders Committee that has been responsible for the development and publication of the two FIGO AUB Systems for Symptoms and Classification of causes, now used worldwide. Dr Munro is a founding co-Chair of the SEUD Abnormal Uterine Bleeding Task Force and is Head of the Menstruation and Abnormal Uterine Bleeding Section of F1000Prime. He has published more than 110 papers, 30 chapters, and five books including Abnormal Uterine Bleeding, released by Cambridge University Press and, recently, with Professor Victor Gomel, Reproductive and Reconstructive Gynecologic Surgery. Dr Munro is also on the Editorial Boards of the Journal of Minimally Invasive Gynecology, Journal of Women's Midlife Health, and the Journal of Endometriosis and Uterine Disease as well as a reviewer for numerous other peer-reviewed specialty journals. He has served the American Association of Gynecologic Laparoscopists (AAGL) as a member of the Board of Trustees (2000-2002) and was the inaugural chair of the AAGL Practice Committee, charged with the development of evidence based practice guidelines related to minimally invasive approaches to gynecology.
