Raising the standard for treating abnormal uterine bleeding (AUB)

AUB is a broad term that describes irregularities involving frequency, regularity, duration, and volume of blood loss outside of pregnancy. Abnormal uterine bleeding is a burden for many women and leads to high costs for the US healthcare system.

In the United States alone there are 33 million cases of AUB per year. AUB accounts for 1/3 of all office visits to gynecologists and 5% of all visits to the emergency room.

The International Federation of Gynecology and Obstetrics (FIGO) classifies AUB using the acronym PALM-COEIN [pahm-koin] by describing two groups of AUB etiologies: “PALM” describes the structural causes, and “COEIN” - the non-structural causes. One or more of these causes can lead to AUB.

Currently, there is no FDA-approved solution for the acute management of abnormal uterine bleeding.

Long-term solutions lack a same day walk-in treatment option that is effective and fertility preserving. The most common surgical treatments are endometrial ablation and hysterectomy.

Avana Health’s treatment system, a drug and device kit, provides a fast outpatient procedure to address abnormal uterine bleeding and improve patients’ quality of life. This starts with addressing an unmet need: the acute management of AUB.

DRUG

  • Can be administered in an outpatient setting

  • The drug’s mechanism of action provides rapid, local cessation of blood flow

  • Does not require refrigerated storage

DEVICE

  • Requires minimal training for provider

  • Functions to create a water-tight seal and deliver optimal pressure of drug (critical for efficacy)

  • Single-use and sterile
